Lighting

Outdoor Lighting Design Basics

Layering light for safety, ambiance, and architecture without glare.

Light in layers

  • Path and step lighting for safe movement
  • Accent lighting for trees, walls, and architecture
  • Area lighting for patios, kitchens, and gathering spaces

Less glare, more effect

Good lighting reveals the landscape without shining into eyes or neighbors' windows. Shielded fixtures, warm color temperatures, and careful aiming make the biggest difference.

Low-voltage systems

Most landscape lighting uses low-voltage LED fixtures powered by a transformer, with timers or smart controls. Any new line-voltage circuits or outlets should be installed by a licensed electrician.

Plan wiring with other work

Running conduit or wire before a patio, wall, or driveway is installed is far easier than retrofitting later.

This guide is general information. Site conditions, codes, and permit requirements vary — confirm specifics for your property before starting work.
